Knowing Your Audience. It's essential to determine who are the likely audience members for your speech. In order to elicit the best response from them, you need to determine (to the best of your ability) their interests and existing knowledge on the subject matter.
You need to know your audience -- at least enough to be able to predict how they think and what will connect with them. Taking the time to tailor a presentation early on during the planning stage will save you a lot of headaches in the long run as you prepare your speech.
